    Bennett Place State Historic Site in Durham, NC. is where Confederate General Joseph Johnston surrendered his army to Union General William T. Sherman on April 26, 1865. Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered his army seventeen day before, on April 9th, 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse, thus effectively ending the war.
