Benson was a really important guy in Oregon. You even see his face at the Multnomah falls on a plaque. This hotel has a lot of history, and actually, the front
desk can provide you a two page guide on the history of the hotel. All i remember is that the wood they used is now extinct and most importantly: THEY HAVE TEMPURPEDIC BEDS! Our sleep was amazing.

Perhaps the best-known hotel in Portland, the historic Benson is an elegant, old-fashioned alternative to the slew of more modern, sterile hotels in downtown Portland. The older part of the building was constructed in 1912 and a second half was seamlessly added on in 1959. Both sides feature similarly priced and appointed rooms, although the older ones are a bit creakier and have trim and mold-work. The whole place is lightly fragranced with an orange scent. There’s also a small workout room (with a window that actually opens for those who want some fresh air while they exercise). The restaurants here are fantastic—the Palm Court serves a buffet breakfast every morning and El Gaucho, an upscale Argentinean Steakhouse, has jazz performances on Wednesday evenings.

This is probably the most famous hotel in Portland, and really sets the standard for Portland's bigger hotels.
Built around 1912, the Benson has an old feel of luxury and elegance set in the subdued shades of a bygone age. In fact you can have a room in the old part or the new part of the hotel, both parts beautifully maintained to period style. I was only a little disappointed the floor boards in the old part didn't creak, but then the hotel is only one hundred years old!
Located in Portland on SW Broadway, the Benson is in easy reach of all the attractions and shopping of the downtown area, but if your priority is to seek rest, enjoy the hotel amenities and your room (and room service), then the Benson is a wonderful place to stay.
Locally, the Benson was always known for its teas and the London Grill, the latter now unfortunately only a private dining facility. The casual guest does have other dining facilities available in the hotel.
Highly recommended if you like the formality of an old style hotel.

“Grand”, “detailed”, “perfect” are just a few of the adjectives I used when I first walked through this hotel. An informed concierge seeing my awe, informed me the dark wood throughout the hotel is made from an almost extinct Russian wood and that the chandelier was imported from Austria. Apparently Mr. Simon Benson was a timber baron and spared no expense when his hotel was being built in the early 1900’s. The rooms are nice, clean, and well sized, and yet very comfortable- not too stiff. I think Mr. Benson would be proud of his hotel today, I know I would if I could see how even the towels are presented (in the shape of duck, origami style, if you must know). The concierge is very friendly and willing to help, and as I mentioned, very informed. Being located on Broadway, the epicenter of downtown Portland’s sites, shopping, and restaurants only adds to the appeal.
Patronized by vacationers and corporate executives, the Benson Hotel offers one of the most comprehensive hotel experiences around. Guests can begin their day with coffee around the lobby fireplace, where a selection of newspapers are available. The London Grill's executive chef, Xavier Bauser, has crafted perhaps the most accomplished menu in the Rose City. Other hotel amenities include gorgeous banquet halls, conference rooms and a fitness center.
The Benson Hotel offers an impressive cast of accommodations that range from standard guestrooms to penthouses and presidential suites. With reproduction period furniture and revival Italian Renaissance décor, each arrangement is an adventure in taste and sophistication. Modern amenities include high-speed wireless Internet access, complimentary wired Internet access, fully stocked minibars and Swedish Temper-pedic mattresses. Carefully nurtured for nine decades and now thoughtfully restored, guests can appreciate the comfort and peaceful ambience that permeate each guestroom accommodation.
