This place of one of my favorite pizza joints ever. If you are a fan of Chicago-style, deep-dish pizza, this is the place to be at. The crust is thick and hearty, and the pizzas are all topped with bountifuls of tomatoes, making the pizza juicy! We ordered both meat and veggie/mushroom pizzas, and all tasted like heaven! Service is ...Popular withFoodiesLocalStudents
The olive oil with different spices and garlic is amazing. When I lived in Berkeley I would always pick some up when I needed something to bring to a housewarming or dinner party type thing. This place is cash only fyi and on weekends there is usually a line. They don't take reservations for small groups. Definitely a great restaurant ...Popular withFoodiesFamilies
Our favorite - the most authentically New York style pizza with fresh, fresh ingredients and amazing topping combos. To-Go. Wine-shop next door. The whole block has great specialty food shops. Walkable from Kiwi. Grab a slice and take the kids to the park 1 block east.
Seasonal cuisine, mainly Italian, but executed flawlessly. We absolutely love this place, odd and funky layout and all. Opened by Chef/Owner Wendy Bruckner in 1994, she's still here and the food is still excellent. If you come here you absolutely need to order the Portabello fries.Popular withLocalFoodiesVegetarian

Design to mimic a Piazza d'Italia in Venezia, the Venezia Restaurant has been serving loyal mostly East Bay customers for a long time, just a couple blocks from the Cal campus. It is my sister's favorite pre-theater in Berkeley (Cal Performances, Berkeley Rep) restaurant. Faux terracotta walls, columned Roman doorway that is a service station, windows looking into the busy ...Popular withBusinessFamiliesVegetarian

4 stars if we are defining California style gelati But 3 stars if you compare it to regional style gelati in Italy. Maybe 2.75 if you are disgruntled and disillusioned after returning from a 2 week trip to Italy (complete with making expressive random arm motions, Italian style, while venting about the lack of similarity) because CA style gelati is ...

Gayle, my Son, and I had a nice early dinner here with our friends Robyn, Ernesto, and their Daughter. Gayle and I just come from an enjoyable Berkeley Rep performance (Dear Elizabeth) and our usual FIVE Lounge stop after the show. Besides enjoying each others company and a nice Dinner, we came to Paisan to discuss possible details around a ...Popular withFoodiesFamilies
I grew up eating Italian food, and now I tend to avoid Italian restaurants because I've eaten so much Italian food I've gotten bored of it. So when planning a dinner with friends, I always hope that nobody suggests Italian. The exception is if they suggest Lo Coco's. The food is quite authentic for its region, and I always enjoy ...Popular withBusinessFamilies

Excellent Italian casual restaurant at affordable prices, especially given the portion sizes. So, this is one of those order-at-the-register-and-then-sit-down places. But, the menu has almost everything you could want (Alfredo, Carbonara, Puttanesca, Bolognese, etc.) and then some really impressive specials too. Neighborly, family-friendly, casual place with great food.Popular withFamilies
Cafe Milano is a decent place to have coffee and a nosh, and at a still reasonable price. It's also a good place to study and otherwise hang out with friends. This time around, Gayle and I stopped in as we were finishing up another wedding venue exploratory expedition. I was also looking for a Sather Gate parking validation, of ...
There is sometimes a fine distinction between a place being a Dive or a Dump. Dives generally have a relaxed and informal atmosphere and are referred to by folks like me as neighbourhood joynts. And depending on the location, individual bars might be considered to be disreputable, sinister, or even a detriment to the community. Yes! However, when a Campus ...
