    The North Face

    5 reviews

Yay, warm clothes for wind/snow weather! There's a good selection of stuff here, you just have to have the patience to look through everything for your size. They had an additional 30-40% off when I came today. This was my first time here; I'll probably be back again.

    Berkeley Hat Co

    3 reviews

Berkeley Hat Company is a really tiny store, but it's good for visiting, especially if you feel like seeing one of the most amazing selections of hats you've ever seen in your life. I never had much need for any of the hats in there in all of the many times I went, but each time, it was a lot ...

    Miki's Paper

    2 reviews

As an overall Japanese stationary shopping experience, I usually prefer Maido. However, the paper is traditional, high quality, and gorgeous. There are many unique pieces to linger on. And even though the prices are a bit dear, I bet you'll buy something! The shop is very comfortable and the service is friendly, helpful, yet understated.

    Trader Joe's

    3 reviews

I stopped at this Trader Joe's this afternoon after renting a Tux down to street for a fancy soirée next month. Although I'm cautious, Gayle is thrilled. The corner of University and MLK sure looks different from the strip mall days of Kragen Auto Parks and Netivot Shalom across Berkeley Way. I'm sure Berkeley welcomes the sales tax revenue, but ...

    Berkeley Natural Grocery

    2 reviews

The Berkeley Natural Grocery Company is an easy walk from the house and is a good place to buy Omega 3 and other related vitamins and minerals. The folks are nice here too. BNG also has an extensive selection of natural body care products and they're good for a tasty organic snack as I continue to walk on down the ...

Pegasus & Pendragon Books - Solano

    2 reviews

This Pegasus is my neighbourhood book store. I can walk here from home and over the years I have grown up in the children's section with my kids, been one of the first patrons inside the store during the annual calendar sale, and have randomly stopped in for magazines, journals, and of course quality new and used books. This store ...

    Cal Student Store

    2 reviews

The ASUC Store has changed a lot over the years. The Cal-branded Office Supplies used to be up front and now you'll find a nice selection in the basement (along with the textbooks). The bookstore is pretty much the same, while the back end of the main floor is pretty much unused. And consistent with probably every other Campus, "Blue ...

    Crate and Barrel Outlet

    2 reviews

This Crate & Darrell Outlet store has been a constant for me on 4th Street, as this shopping district has evolved. Their stock is continually changing and as a friend rightly mentions, selection can be hit or miss depending on what you're seeking. My purchases have included plates, glasses, a particularly nice coffee table and other items too numerous to ...

    Blick Art Materials

    2 reviews

Now that Amsterdam Art is dead and gone, Blick is the place to get in your artistic licks. I tend to gravitate towards the left side of the store (walking in), as that's where the cool stationary and accessories are located. The only thing really missing is a good fine pens section and a selection of A4/B5 notebooks and papers. ...

    Vintage Berkeley

    2 reviews

This is one of 3 stores that are owned by the same partners. I have shopped at their Solano Cellars (Albany) location for years and we had also had an excellent experience with the Vintage Berkeley that is located on College Avenue. What Gayle and I particularly enjoyed about the College Avenue location was the attractive space, a very wine-engaged ...

    Dark Carnival Imaginative Fiction Bookstore

    1 review

This small stretch of Claremont Avenue almost has it all - 3 book places, Furniture, Star Grocery, Semifreddi's, a neat flower/gift shop, and a recently relocated Scout "Hardware" Store. I got to see it all again last Sunday during street-wide sidewalk sale. Parking is fairly easy, but watch out for the traffic. As for the book places, all 3 have ...

    Builders Booksource

    1 review

A fun bookstore with lots of interesting books and such. Architecture and Design subjects are particularly well represented here. Great themes, many of which I had never considered nor am I particularly handy with. And yet I have found and purchased many a find. The staff is also very knowledgable and friendly. The store itself is comfortable to browse around ...

    Royal Robbins Inc

    1 review

Gayle's first reaction when she saw one of my Royal Robbins shirts: "What is it with the flaps?" One of her girlfriends immediately explained that I shopped at Royal Robbins! This is nice looking, outdoor-friendly and comfortable clothing store that has very nice prices. I've been coming here for years. The special "sidewalk" sales are especially noteworthy. Their clothes just ...

    Alko Office Supply

    1 review

As a local and independent small business, their prices can be a bit higher than say Office Depot. However, they have a unique selection and its always enjoyable to find something interested within one of the aisles. The place is a bit messy and Berkeley parking of course challenging, but I don't really care.
