Things to do in Berkeley

I have been, and always will be, a book lover. Modern day electronic reading devices can never replace the touch and feel of the real printed words. Do you understand the joy of having a good book in hand? Do you understand the sadness when your favorite story ends? There were times when I spent long hours in the book ...Popular withLocalDesignTrendsters

This Pegasus remains standing after defeating the Death Star (Barnes and Noble) across the street. Although my home Pegasus store is on Solano, I do manage to occasionally wander over to the south end of Downtown Berkeley (and usually avoiding Half Price Books entirely). This Pegasus seems a little smaller and less crowded than the Solano store, but has the ...Popular withStudentsFamiliesLocal

My son is the 3rd generation of our family to shop at this family fishmonger, and there are several reasons why we keep coming back. That would include a great selection of fresh fish, knowledgeable staff, good customer care and feeding, and at a fair price. This is simply "As Good as it Gets" for most any fish-related meal experience ...Popular withFoodiesLocalFamilies

It seems sometimes that being in Berkeley is like living the Book of Genesis. For example, there are unique themes of freedom and a lot of dysfunctional families. And so it was it was until recently with the operation of the Monterey Market. But since "Community Interest" here is sometimes more insufferable that what's actually going on within a particular ...Popular withFamiliesLocalFoodies

One of my favourite villains that appeared in the old Batman TV Series was the Mad Hatter. His real name was Jervis Tetch, and was inspired by the lunacy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to commit crimes. He used his mind-control technology (that popped out of his large hat) to bend people to his will. You're probably Mad as well ...

MIki Paper has been on 4th street for at least a dozen years. It has a great selection of fine, textured, Japanese papers. I used to go here and pick out some for my Mom to make hand made specialty gift cards. She once made 300 of them for a business, and each one was unique. The great textured paper ...Popular withSpiritualBusiness

This Pegasus is my neighbourhood book store. I can walk here from home and over the years I have grown up in the children's section with my kids, been one of the first patrons inside the store during the annual calendar sale, and have randomly stopped in for magazines, journals, and of course quality new and used books. This store ...Popular withFamilies

The ASUC Store has changed a lot over the years. The Cal-branded Office Supplies used to be up front and now you'll find a nice selection in the basement (along with the textbooks). The bookstore is pretty much the same, while the back end of the main floor is pretty much unused. And consistent with probably every other Campus, "Blue ...Popular withSpiritualBusiness

This Crate & Darrell Outlet store has been a constant for me on 4th Street, as this shopping district has evolved. Their stock is continually changing and as a friend rightly mentions, selection can be hit or miss depending on what you're seeking. My purchases have included plates, glasses, a particularly nice coffee table and other items too numerous to ...

I have been coming here for years. It's not because I am an artist, I am not. But I seemed to be surrounded by artists all the time. And I do love art, to look at, not to create. I don't have the patience or the desire, although I have sketched a little. I did take an art class at ...

This is one of 3 stores that are owned by the same partners. I have shopped at their Solano Cellars (Albany) location for years and we had also had an excellent experience with the Vintage Berkeley that is located on College Avenue. What Gayle and I particularly enjoyed about the College Avenue location was the attractive space, a very wine-engaged ...Popular withOutdoor

This small stretch of Claremont Avenue almost has it all - 3 book places, Furniture, Star Grocery, Semifreddi's, a neat flower/gift shop, and a recently relocated Scout "Hardware" Store. I got to see it all again last Sunday during street-wide sidewalk sale. Parking is fairly easy, but watch out for the traffic. As for the book places, all 3 have ...

A fun bookstore with lots of interesting books and such. Architecture and Design subjects are particularly well represented here. Great themes, many of which I had never considered nor am I particularly handy with. And yet I have found and purchased many a find. The staff is also very knowledgable and friendly. The store itself is comfortable to browse around ...

Gayle's first reaction when she saw one of my Royal Robbins shirts: "What is it with the flaps?" One of her girlfriends immediately explained that I shopped at Royal Robbins! This is nice looking, outdoor-friendly and comfortable clothing store that has very nice prices. I've been coming here for years. The special "sidewalk" sales are especially noteworthy. Their clothes just ...

As a local and independent small business, their prices can be a bit higher than say Office Depot. However, they have a unique selection and its always enjoyable to find something interested within one of the aisles. The place is a bit messy and Berkeley parking of course challenging, but I don't really care.
