In the film Goodbye Lenin, the grandmother of the protagonist comes out of a coma in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall. So as not to shock her, he spends the film attempting to convince her that nothing has changed. If someone is travelling with a grandmother in a similar condition, I heartily recommend the Best Western Hotel Hungaria. Located about a block away from the main Keleti train station, the Best Western offers a lobby, cocktail bar, and restaurant that are distinctly pre 1990 and offer the retro charm that many visitors to Budapest are seeking. However, once inside the massive complex of 499 rooms, one will find somewhat small, clean, generic rooms that are popular with tour groups and Finnish visitors to the Budapest Grand Prix in the summer. Unfortunately, the view from the rooms facing the facade of the train station in the front of the building are marred by the big gaping hole that will be a station for the new metro line currently being built. This is expected to be completed in 2014, and while work ceases at night, those who enjoy a peaceful sleep during the late morning and afternoon may want to plan accordingly and book a room in the back of the hotel.

There is a slightly seedy feel to this neighbourhood, but the streets of Budapest are remarkably safe to walk day or night, and actually this isn’t considered a particularly tough barrio. Unfortunately, there’s also a slightly seedy feel to this Best Western hotel, which does give the unmistakable impression of having seen better days. The staff here are friendly enough, but that doesn’t really compensate for too small beds, and a breakfast buffet that consists of treats such as flavoured yellow water in lieu of orange juice and tasteless (as in insipid) instant coffee. Corridors are dim and poky, there’s a smell of leftover cigarette smoke about the place, but well, did we mention the free wifi throughout the hotel? Perhaps not such a bad place to stay if you get a last minute rate or something, but the four star rating is definitely stretching a friendship.

A reassuringly familiar name to travelers the hotel delivers to expectations and is located well, one bus stop from the Keleti railway station on a bus line into downtown. Many local eateries around and one gets a sampling of Hungarian business life in the area.
Rooms are nicely furnished and comfortable although on the small side. A rich breakfast buffet and wifi are included in the price of the room. You can enjoy all the food you care to have guilt free because the hotel does have a fitness room, sauna, and Jacuzzi. You can work off your sins later if you are tired of walking around. As in most hotels, the price is slightly lower if you reserve ahead of time.
Lobby is large and always busy but staff is friendly and willing to answer questions or help.
