Hotel Majestic lives up to its name. The seven-floor hotel, which opened in 1937, occupies a 475-year-old building that originally was a two-floor house. It features colonial and baroque architecture, with beautiful tiling and bright paint everywhere, and a real bellhop in the elevator. (Also a security guard with a rifle at the door.) The rooms are surprisingly spacious and the one I saw had a thrilling balcony with a great view of the zocalo – thrilling because you can see right through the bottom to the traffic around the zocalo. That view also comes with zocalo noise in the daytime. In the room I viewed, the thin carpet was a bit torn in some places and the panel around the door handle was loose. Suites include a larger second room with a sitting area, old-fashioned tubs, safes and coffee makers. All in all, this represents quite a deal for a charming and historic hotel in such a prime location. The hotel also has a top-floor restaurant with an excellent view of the zocalo and cathedral.

I hope I look as good as the Best Western Majestic when I'm 475 years old. That's the age (according to one hotel employee) of this hotel, which may have the best location in Mexico City. Many of the rooms face the zócalo, or main square, looking across the vast plaza at the presidential palace. The building has some exquisite architectural details, such as beautiful tiles all the way up the spiral staircase and knee-tremble-inspiring balconies overlooking the zócalo. And the hotel still has an elevator attendant. All those great details aside, age has not treated the hotel well in all respects. While they may have great views, the rooms themselves are not attractive, and some of the bathrooms are downright ugly. And the gloomy lobby belies the airy atmosphere that permeates the rest of the hotel. But its flaws don't outweigh the fact that the Majestic is a good deal in a perfect location.
