Don't judge a book by its cover - the rooms at the Best Western Granville are much nicer than you would guess by looking at its drab exterior. Even the standard rooms here are quite spacious by downtown standards with a comfy queen size bed, seating area, and clean bathroom. For families or small groups, there are suites with two double beds and a living room with a sofa bed. The suites have also been recently renovated so have newer furniture and a more modern style than the standard rooms. All rooms have a nice selection of amenities like a microwave and mini-fridge and the WiFi is free. The hotel also allows pets and smoking on certain levels.

The location on Granville makes it sound really central, but the truth is it's at the far end of Granville (which is also the sleazier end of the street) and it's a 10 minute walk to the skytrain. It is convenient for going to Granville Island though and the bus strop is right across the street.

The price is definitely the main reason to stay here and, adding to the value, rates include a hot breakfast and pass to an off-site fitness center.

There’s nothing castle-like about the Chateau Granville, but it’s a decent option for budget travellers that don’t do hostels. Rooms are surprisingly large for the price and include a separate sitting area, walk-out balcony, microwave and fridge. There’s also the option of saving $20-30 bucks by booking a room in the annex, which is an unattended 3-storey building across the alleyway, but I don’t’ recommend it (and neither do the staff). Unless you’re doing some serious penny-pinching, ask for a room in the main tower.

Although the hotel is conveniently located on Granville Street, which is handy in terms of shops, food and transportation, the surrounding 3-4 blocks can feel a little grubby at night due to the sex shops, pubs and panhandlers.

The Edge Social Grille & Lounge downstairs is tastefully decorated, but the prices they’re charging ($8 for yam fries!) are high for a restaurant that has yet to make a name for itself. If you like French bistros, head over to the Twisted Fork across the street, which also has one of the best brunches in town, or choose from one of many nearby sushi joints.

Note: This is one of the few hotels in Vancouver that has smoking rooms. Even though they’re restricted to the 9th floor, the smoke carries into other areas like the elevators.

This hotel is prominent among a few other large chain-hotels at the south-end of the Granville Street entertainment strip but has a corner-lot and a large notable facade.

The best part about the hotel is the large, spacious rooms that come at quite affordable rates. The orientation of the building gives each room’s balcony an interesting view (my favourite is straight down Granville Street) and recently completed renovations put new carpets, furniture, bedding, and mattresses throughout the hotel and relocated the hotel restaurant and lounge (now called Edge) to the ground floor where it enjoys the Granville strip’s largest outdoor patio thanks to the building’s angled orientation.

The hotel exterior as well as some of the interior features do seem to be straight out of the 70’s, like it or not. First, the concrete building looks concrete and there is even a concrete wall-sculpture in the lobby. And although not a defining feature, the vending machines on each floor are definitely old and make the space feel a quite dated. Also, the entire 9th floor has been reserved as smoking rooms, an uncommon thing for smoker-unfriendly Vancouver. All of this may be overlooked when confronted with a staff complement that really seems friendly and willing to help. If I had to guess, I’d say that the staff at Chateau Granville like their jobs and take pride in the hotel which is a good sign and in contrast to even some of the prettiest boutique hotels in the city.

Downtown Vancouver is bustling with things to do, but the variety of attractions and restaurants also make finding accommodations that don't break the bank a bit of a challenge. However, the Best Western Chateau Granville is one reasonably priced option that has all the necessities. In an area with so much to do, you aren't really going to be spending too much time in your suite anyways. The rooms are comfortable yet somewhat generic, but they are priced accordingly. The staff are helpful, and are more than willing to let you in on the most popular attractions, ensuring you make the most of your stay. The nightlife around this hotel is lively, so it's nice to have a place like this that's centrally located in case getting home after a night of revelry is complicated by a few too many.
