For some reason, I don't generally expect luxury or even modernity in the rather outdated town of Chula Vista. As my mom grew up there, I still visit my grandpa's 60-year-old dingy little house now and then, and have always come to equate Chula Vista with age and a general sense of "rundownness." (It's a word. Look it up.) However, I was surprised to find that the Best Western (a name I generally associate with budget quality) in South Bay was perfectly respectable. Clean, comfortable, and yes, modern (!), it provides a great place to stay - in a decent part of town. Though it's just off a busy street, I didn't notice much noise pollution, especially in the room. With a pool and fitness center, daily tasks were available right at hand. Free breakfast, a spacious and rather comfortable bed, and a flatscreen TV added definite perks, while ease of driving access remains a particular pro in my mind. (I hate when hotels are crammed onto busy street corners, making driving and parking a nightmare.) And of course, for some reason I am always tickled by the shampoo and liquid soap dispenser inside Best Western showers - it may not be Pantene Pro-V, but it solves the problem of forgetting your own soap and having to step out to retrieve the free tiny bottles from the sink counter, soaking the bathroom floor in doing so.

The hotel grounds were quite a bit larger than I was expecting, and the sizable pool was tucked away from the street, just like I like them. Parking was free and quite ample, which was nice since a whole lot of luggage would be a real pain to have to carry through the giant parking lot. I was surprised to find that the hotel also had a small gym for guest use. It’s nothing extravagant, but it’ll do for a few days’ stay. My room wasn’t particularly stylish, but it did have a flat screen TV and was quite large for a standard two queen room. Given the clean room, surprising amenities for a budget hotel, and friendly front desk service, I would definitely come back if I needed a place to stay in between driving to San Diego’s sights

The extra friendly receptionist, Luis, showed me to a newly renovated room (I believe they finished the upgrade five months ago) that boasts granite countertops and a comfortable looking king size bed. I was surprised how classy I felt standing in a Best Western! The location of this hotel is great because it is within walking distance to the San Diego trolley, which means you have access to the whole city while staying safely out of the hustle and bustle of the tourist attractions. There is wifi, free parking, breakfast and a small pool. The hotel has been around for a while, though you wouldn't know because of how wonderfully it has been up-kept. Luis also informed me that they are expecting to completely redo the bathrooms, thought the one I saw was clean and perfectly fine. The trolley being so close is the main reason this hotel is a perfect launching point for visitors, and I would totally recommend this Best Western to a friend coming for a visit.
