This hostel has an amazingly helpful staff who gave us really good recommendations on what to see and eat. Tony sat down with us and planned our itinerary step by step.
It is a bit far from the center but cheap public buses run from this area to the entire city. It is surrounded by really great Chinese restaurants.
Also a nice a/c common area to hang out in and escape the heat.Recommended for:

It’s no secret that Singapore is expensive for backpackers, but if you stay at the Betel Box you really get your money’s worth. The dorms are pretty close to being the cheapest in the city, but still clean and cool enough for a solid night’s sleep (important in the heat). If you’re traveling with a small group you can also book a dorm all to yourself. There’s a keycode to get in and out of the hotel and lockers so you don’t need to worry about security.
The reception area is also the lounge and there’s lots to keep you busy – guest computers, movies, Wii, guidebooks, and even a pool table. Rates include breakfast at the Betel Box cafe but if you sleep in they’ll give you a discount on the lunch menu instead.
The staff are really helpful and know lots of places to eat that are cheap and yummy. If you’re planning to go to the Singapore Zoo or other big attractions they can hook you up with discounted tickets.
The location is slightly inconvenient since it’s a 10 minute walk to the subway and then a 15 minute ride to downtown, but the neighborhood is interesting with historic buildings and karaoke bars and it’s a breeze to get to the airport.Recommended for:

Away from the somewhat scuzzy backpacker environs of Little India, Betel Box succeeds admirably at creating a genuine budget traveller pad. It's clean and well-run, the staff are super-helpful, the breakfasts are good (fresh fruit!), and it's got a fine common area with computers, a Wii and, of course, free wifi. Some will knock its location a bit east of the center on Joo Chiat Rd, but this Chinese/Malay neighborhood has some great restaurants and loads of character, and while there may also be a fair number of... ahem, 'working girls', it's also not a tourist ghetto.Recommended for:

A great hostel run by a super friendly staff, who run weekly food tours and bar tours. The rooms themselves are clean but they are big. You will hear the other 10 or so people sleeping in the dorm accommodations.
The location is a bit aways from the the main part of the city, but it's only a train ride away.

The Betel Box hostel is a nice historical hostel that offers a really unique experience. Maintaining much of the building’s original classical exterior, much of the hostel gives a nostalgic trip back to Singapore’s colonial past. The Betel Box hostel has nice big mixed dorms available. They also provide lockers to store your bags. You will need to make your bed on your own and there are basic clean bathrooms on every floor. One of the nicer features of the hostel is the huge common area that is filled with books/TV/Video games. The Hostel also provides free breakfast and free wifi. For those who have not brought their laptops along may use the hostel’s computer for up to 30mins/day. The Betel Box restaurant is entirely unique on its own and very Singaporean as it is decorated with local art and serves local Peranakan food. They provide cheap shuttles between the airport and the hostel as well. Nice place to stay for a Singapore experience!Recommended for:
