Excellent! - 92% of guests recommend

One of the top two lodgings in Big Sur (the other is the Post Ranch Inn, the entrance to which is almost right across Hwy 1 from the Ventana turn-off), Ventana affects low-key luxury on its hilltop with ocean views. If you can't afford to stay overnight (and not many people can), drop by the terrace restaurant for drinks and ...

I didn't stay at the Big Sur River Inn, but I had lunch there. While we were waiting to be seated, we hung out along the river. The Inn has comfy seats right in the water. There's picnic space, too, if you want to bring your own food.

    Glen Oaks Motel

At Glen Oaks, a collection of refined-meets-rustic accommodations, our vote goes to Big Sur Cabin for its private outdoor courtyard off the bedroom. You’ll find twin claw-foot tubs by San Francisco designer Steve Justrich, a wood-burning fire pit, Adirondack chairs, and a redwood picket fence fringed by cacti, ferns, and forget-me-nots. Lather up with handmade Vermont soap, and listen to ...

This is possibly the most beautiful campground in California. It sits perched on a cliff above the ocean, with spectacular views in both directions of mountains cascading to the sea. It is a short walk down a path to a rocky beach. In the last year they stopped offering running water here (apparently because the insurance costs of the manual ...

Luxurious yurt eco experience on coastal California, why yes! but here luxurious means modern conveniences are available within a few steps from the accommodations. (meaning...at least it is available) Off the Coastal HW1, Treebones is a unique eco resort that has fantastic views with amenities such as spa, pool, and running water. There are hiking trails in the vicinity and ...

Nothing fancy, but the fairytale forest setting of this restaurant, general store and cabins make it feel like a more authentic Big Sur experience than roadside motels. Stroll out your duplex cabin door, pick up coffee in the lobby and then go for a hike among the redwood groves or to seasonal waterfalls that usually peak in late spring.

As one of the best-priced lodges in Big Sur, Ripplewood delivers. Sure, the staff is a little flaky, but the cabins are cozy and comfortable, the restaurant (open just for breakfast and lunch) is pretty tasty, and the setting is just as beautiful as the pricier lodgings in Big Sur.

This is MY idea of romance: snuggling, roasting marshmallows, hiking and holding hands, team building via cooking and setting up camp. Fernwood has been our to-go-romantic-spot in the Bay Area. My advice is to book sites #51, 52, or 53 which are privately located off the bank of the Big Sur Creek. They are the best sites on the campground. ...

Run the US Forest Service at the quieter southern end of Big Sur, this campground sometimes still has space available when everywhere else further north has filled up. You can go beachcombing nearby at Jade Cove, then come back to your site and toast up s'mores by starlight.

Went here on a four day retreat back in the late eighties. Wonderful- very simple room and shower with two vegetarian meals a day. Beautiful non-seating chapel. You stand in tiers that go 3/4 round the alter which is in the center. First time I went, I'd gone in July. After settling in, I went for a walk around the ...

Great small restaurant on the ocean side of rout 1. They are known for their fish and chips and have great view on the ocean when you get (or ask) for a window table. In case you are traveling with kids they don't have a kids menu or anything that sounds like kids food.

Big Sur campground is as classic California camping as it gets. It's a huge campground, the front sections (closer to the entrance) sit in a redwood forest. The section in the rear is more open camping, aka less privacy and more sun. There is a creek that runs through the campground, sites next to the creek are booked fast and ...
