Brunch is big business in Portland, and this downtown cafe is one of the city's most loved establishments. The food here is mostly sourced from local producers and they strive to use as many organic ingredients as possible. They do breakfasty takes of NW regional cuisine quite well--the oyster hash and the vegan tofu scramble are particularly popular. It's a good place to fill up on carbs and protein before a long day of hiking.Recommended for:

Every time I come to Portland, there's always a new food place or neighbourhood to try out. And since Gayle and I were in town, the timing was right for a nice breakfast together. Our Hotel (The Nines) recommended the Bijou Cafe and her boss had previously raved about it.
In hindsight, we're not sure why. There was only a short line when we arrived and we were seated fairly promptly. From there, the service was a remained fairly lethargic throughout our meal. It didn't look that busy, but whether it was water, taking our order, delivery from the kitchen, or even receiving and paying for our check, it was wait wait wait. However, the wait person was friendly enough and did exhibit some nice occasional service flourishes (when she was around).
At the same time, the food was also very good, hot, and fresh, as Gayle enjoyed her farmer's omelet, and I did the same with a tuna melt panini. However, if I wanted good food without decent service, maybe we should have found a well-regarded food cart instead.
