The Black Hills is considered sacred land by the Sioux Tribes, and when you drive through it, it isn't hard to understand why. The area is beautiful. Lovely forests and prairies with ancient weathered mountains (far older than the Rockies). Plentiful local fauna including wild american bison, elk, and bighorn sheep. Close to major monuments like Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. It is one of the great plains jewels and a definite must see

The Black Hills is home to Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave and some of the most picturesque campgrounds in America. Herds of wild buffalo roams these woods and prairies, as do elk, deer and bighorn sheep. This is also historic territory, sacred to the Sioux and home of Deadwood, famous thanks to HBO and Wild Bill Hickok.

Unexpectedly gorgeous, winding roads lead you through beautiful evergreen forests, striking rock formations and revitalized mining towns. Easy to get around and lots of things to see (Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse monument, huge underground cave systems!) Many of the towns have family friendly activities. We were there off season so many things were closed but we could easily envision a busy trip in season.

This area lays on the border between Wyoming and South Dakota. Black comes after dark Ponderosa pines forests. It is worthy spending a couple of days in this area, visiting Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse or just driving through streets surrounded by a gorgeous nature.
