Congrats to our July SF Bay Area Rock Star of the month, Caroline Carlos! Caroline hails from San Jose, CA and has been a Gogobot Pro for 2 years in a row! You can find her on Gogobot contributing awesome recommendations to the Local Culture, Budget, Business, Foodie and History Buffs Tribes. Here’s a little more about what she loves about Gogobot, the Bay Area and traveling:
Connie: How did you hear about Gogobot and what do you love most about it?
Caroline: A friend invited to me to one of your parties. Naturally, I got curious about the app. I love that a) it’s this local fave-Instagram-Facebook-forum sort of hybrid b) it’s international, and c) in a single screen, I’m exposed to a wider array of ideas for new adventures from like-minded travelers than I might find elsewhere.
Connie: Where in the world can we find you traveling to next?
Caroline: I’d thought to do Greece and Turkey next year, but I’m now thinking Italy and/or Spain again – those are the two countries I’ll perpetually want to revisit. There’s something in the southern European air, especially Italy…it has the warmest people; in the blink of an eye, you find you’ve suddenly make lifelong friends!
Connie: What has been your favorite trip and why?
Caroline: That’s like asking a mother which child she loves the most! (I don’t have kids, though, so maybe not the greatest analogy.) Every trip has left me with unforgettable memories, but if I have to pick one, it’d be my most recent trip to Italy. Half the trip was on a dig site – I partook in an archaeological excavation of an Etruscan necropolis! The other half of the trip was immersing myself in the culture – eating family meals with local friends, speaking as much Italian as possible, making tiramisu with a friend’s dad, that kind of thing. I even helped out at a friend’s B&B for a bit…some guests asked if I lived there!
Connie: What do you love about the Bay Area?
Caroline: It’s a food-lover’s paradise! All sorts of ethnic cuisines –good ethnic food– for whatever suits your mood. I’ve admittedly been to many cities across the country where I sometimes wonder if I’ve been spoiled by the variety and quality of the food here. You can find some of my fave local go-tos in my custom guide, “A Taste of My Favorite Bay Area Restaurants.”
Connie: What is your dream destination and who would you want to take with you?
Caroline: Not sure I could say “dream destination” so much as a “dream trip.” Let’s get philosophical for a minute: You know how Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Life is a journey, not a destination?” Well, my perspective on travel is much the same. I take photos, sure, everyone does; but whereas some of my travel buds are all about capturing that “perfect memory,” I’m more into befriending locals and seeing the world (and us Americans) through their eyes. I want to try all sorts of local food. I want to rent an apartment rather than stay in a hotel. I want to see ruins and artifacts and stand in awe of the history behind it all. These are far more indelible memories. Put all that in my purse, and send me around the world for 6-12 months – that would be a dream trip. Ok, I realize that’s probably not the answer you want, so let’s go with…Brazil with my best friends!
I love your perspective on travel, Caroline! Thanks for inspiring us with your experiences and keep on rocking!
