It's an amazing island in Panama. Local stores are run by locals and foreigners. It's very inexpensive area and it definitely has lots of character. The people are great and very welcoming. The islands are accessible by small boats and it cost close to nothing to travel back and forth.

if you like trekking, try this great 8hr. hiking "The Quetzals Trail" from Cerro Punta to Boquete. I didn't see any Quetzals but the trail itself was great and not so hard. most of it down hill.

Cahuita is a tiny little town on the Caribbean coast not too far from Puerto Viejo. It's pretty and nice, and doesn't have as many tourists as Puerto Viejo.
