Bonaventure Cemetery is located right outside of Savannah along the shoreline. The cemetery is vast and with the spanish moss swinging gently above the old graves, it retains a haunted feel.

It's not that often that I go out of my way to see a cemetery. However, Bonaventure has that kind of reputation. Made famous by "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," Bonaventure is the final resting place of Savannah's most famous citizens. Johnny Mercer and Conrad Aiken are buried there. However it's really the incredible statue work that has gone into many of the graves that makes Bonaventure more of an artwork. Full life statues of people and angels abound. In addition, the cemetery is located right on the water and is overhung by large trees and Spanish moss.

You can't go to Savannah without making a stop here. There's an eerie quality that takes over as you walk among the headstones, reading the sometimes touching, sometimes disturbing stories of those buried here. Hauntingly beautiful in a true Southern Gothic style, this is one of those spots where history comes alive.
