- Borghese Palace Art HotelOct 29, 2013
Super slick and contemporary, the Borghese Palace Art Hotel seriously lives up to its name: this place is luxuriously palatial and busting at the seams with art. One detail I really appreciated is that the art in the lobby (generously sized but grouped into wacky seating areas), features a constantly rotating display of art from local and foreign artists. They actually have a curator for the lobby, but the art is really infused throughout the hotel. If you're an artist, it's worth asking if they would consider your work for a show.
The lobby and room demonstrated such a disciplined fidelity to a black-and-white color scheme that my eyes were shocked by the gentle pink of the bathroom. Way to sensitize me to color, Borghese! The wooden floors in there felt great on bare feet too.
A real draw for staying here is the spa downstairs. It's not open all night, but the steam room and hot tub are built in to the cavelike ancient Etruscan tombs (ok I don't know if they are historically accurate -- but that is what it felt like!), bricked archways and seductive and relaxing low lighting.
Also the neighborhood is great. The hotel is on a really nice street in a beautiful neighborhood. There are museums withins steps of the front door and the shopping is just what I hoped it might be.

It isn't clear during your first few steps into the building, but the Borghese really is an art hotel. Once you get past the check-in desk, you'll see what I mean. Everything is fashionably neutral, in shades of black, white, and grey, and there are chairs in the common room that look like ornate plush leather but are actually plastic. (I was totally fooled!) There’s also a baby grand piano downstairs (that had DJ equipment sitting on top of it, but I won’t hold that against them) that supposedly belongs to a famous songwriter who's name I have completely forgotten. One of my favorite things about this hotel, though, is the glass elevator that has outside views once you get past the ground floor. The other was the cool spa room with a sauna, steam bath, and hot tub, all built inside 500-year-old caves. As for the rooms, they’re somewhat neutral, but they’re nice and clean and tasteful. I wouldn’t exactly call this hotel comfortable, but it’s definitely stylish.

Ooooh…arty….stark. This sleek place made me feel extremely "cool" to be inside, but I wouldn't say I ever really felt comfortable or at home. It doesn't have the warm, fuzzy atmosphere that makes you want to cozy up inside for a long weekend, but it does feel ultra modern and hip. I did appreciate the artfulness of the place - obviously they took great care to cultivate really beautiful, individual pieces of art to decorate the extensive space. They do offer an extensive range of services (babysitter, personal shopper, dog sitter, guided tours), so that could be helpful to some travelers. Mostly, this is a hotel where I would stay if I were trying to impress someone I was traveling with.Recommended for:Family Travelers
