Rising up from a park in the center of the small town of the same name, the Buddhist monument here (reputedly the largest in the world) rises in nine levels culminating in a gigantic central stupa. Each tier boasts superb bas relief carvings telling stories from the Buddhist scriptures, though you’ll certainly need a guide (around 80,000IDR) to interpret them. At the time of writing, the iconic top third of the monument (which also yields the best views) was disappointingly closed for restoration after the eruption of nearby Mt. Merapi, which covered it in ash. As Indonesia’s single biggest tourist draw, Borobudur is certainly worth your time to visit from Jogjakarta, though its enormous repute is hard to live up to.

It is a magnificent temple and a must visit while you are either in Yogyakarta or Solo. If you don't go with a guide, you can hire a local guide on the spot. The guide will be able to explain the carvings on the wall, which is very interesting.

Who does not know Borobudur? This Buddhist temple has 1460 relief panels and 504 Buddha effigies in its complex. Millions of people are eager to visit this building as one of the World Wonder Heritages. It is not surprising since architecturally and functionally, as the place for Buddhists to say their prayer, Borobudur is attractive.

Borobudur was built by King Samaratungga, one of the kings of Old Mataram Kingdom, the descendant of Sailendra dynasty. Based on Kayumwungan inscription, an Indonesian named Hudaya Kandahjaya revealed that Borobudur was a place for praying that was completed to be built on 26 May 824, almost one hundred years from the time the construction was begun. The name of Borobudur, as some people say, means a mountain having terraces (budhara), while other says that Borobudur means monastery on the high place. (yogyes.com)

What an amazing temple, 8 levels of storytelling and amazingly beautiful stone carvings of Budha. This fantastic temple is the biggest Budhist temple in the world built between the 7th and 8th centuries. It's located in the Central Java, 3 to 3 1/2 hours from Semarang by bus.

Borobodur is limited to one site only and as a result, comparisons with the Angkor complex in Siam Reap fall short in terms of size and the number of independent sites which one is able to visit.
In terms of location however, Borobodur is far more superior, being nestled at the centre of a ring of 6 active volcanoes and surrounded by high volcanic ridges, dripping with lush vegetation.
The temple is situated in a volcanic valley and is surrounded by working rice paddies which make a great bike ride if you are around for a few days.
I would recommend taking a tour guide as they can explain a great deal about the meaning of the layout of the temple as well as the specific scenes which you see carved into the lower levels.
We took advantage of the elephant tours available from the visitor centre and had a fantastic time, it really was an unforgettable experience.

Description

A shrine to Buddha and a pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Java's Borobudur is not to be missed. Buried under volcanic ash for years, the site was finally cleared in 1814. Made of six square platforms, more than 2,600 panels and 500 Buddha statues, this is a true architectural gem and you should take your time wandering around the grounds. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. If crowds ... read more
