Brickell is a great neighborhood to stay for a trip to Miami because it is centrally located in the vast spread that is the Miami metro area. Brickell is in downtown and is home to many bars, clubs and restaurants catered to young professionals. If you can afford it, the Viceroy is a beautiful and famous hotel in Brickell. However, there are many more reasonably priced places to stay.
Brickell is great because it is in striking distance of all the Miami attractions. It is a short drive to South Beach which is the quintessential miami hotspot for clubbing and entertainment. It is also very close to Key Biscayne, which features vast beautiful beaches. Brickell is also reasonably close to Coral Gables and Coconut Grove which are Miami suburbs teaming with culture and fun.
I would ABSOLUTELY recommend renting a car in Miami. The city based around a network of highways and has a strong car culture. It will make your site seeing a whole lot easier if you have a car. There is a metro rail that does stop in Brickell and will take you out to the Miami suburbs but it is a single line that is primarily intended for commuters. Also, there is no easy public transit to South Beach of Key Biscayne.
An alternative to car rental is Zip Car which is fairly popular in the Miami Area. This might be a viable option if you plan on staying in the Brickell area and just want one or two day trips.
