    Colosseum

1.0 mi from Bright apartment, renovated, in the center of Rome
    515 reviews

The gladiators in combat is sad but the structure is too historical to miss. Must See in Rome. Avoid the Photo Op costumed gladiators unless you want to pay a significant amount for the photos. $5 was insultingly too little and I didn't value the photos for more. Not a pleasant exchange, especially with gladiator types.

A little crowded, a lot touristy, but a must-see on any visit to Rome. Great place for people-watching and taking a break from sightseeing.

    Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

0.43 mi from Bright apartment, renovated, in the center of Rome
    58 reviews

Santa Maria Maggiore has had a church on it since the 13th century. It is the largest of those dedicated to the Virgin Mary, thus the name, Maggiore. Apparently there’s 26 churches in Rome dedicated to Mary. I would have thought there were more. There are lots of golden mosaics on the inside and the wooden coffered and gilded ceiling ...

The church itself was OK, but I fell in love with Michelangelo's Moses sculpture. Worth a visit just for the Moses.

This may sound like sacrilege but I would recommend that you spend your time here in preference to joining the massive queues at St Peters in the Vatican City. St Johns (San Giovanni) is the oldest and ranks first among the four major basilicas of Rome itself, as opposed to the Vatican, and is the cathedral of the Church of ...

This church houses the outrageously theatrical sculpture called the Ecstacy of Saint Theresa in the Cornaro Chapel by Gianlorenzo Bernini, a genius artist. The statue is like a stage which depicts a moment described by Saint Teresa of Avila in her autobiography, where she had the vivid vision of an angel piercing her heart with a golden shaft, causing her ...

I was spending an afternoon walking around Rome when I came across this place and I sure am glad that I did. I find this sort of thing fascinating, so I had to go in. I was not disappointed. It's beautiful, creepy, unnerving and awesome. Really, it's amazing how much awesomeness is packed into such a small space. I wish ...

Not so famous on the Roman guides and must-see, this basilica is definitely a must see. In fact it is 3 superposed basilicas constructed over time, so you enter the most recent one, than go downstairs to the second, and to once more to the third base where you arrive to the level of the water. in one word IMPRESSING.

Nero's Golden House is very cool inside. I remember trying to imagine what it would have been like in its glory days. There were stories about thieves coming in on ropes to take the riches inside, and other interesting things. It was also slightly creepy since it wasn't brightly lit and is underground mostly. Sadly, it's been closed since 2010 ...

This old stable block is now an art museum that programs an interesting rotation of modern and classic art. The horse sized circular ramp ascending to the entrance is particularly cool, revealing the equine origins of the place.

Founded in 1889 the museum holds most of the antiquities found in Rome since 1870 as well as existing collections of classical arts. The exhibits displayed in the Palazzo Massimo near the central Termini are originals dating from the 2nd century BC to the end of the 4th century AD. On the 2nd floor particularly are decorations from public buildings ...

    Quattro Fontane

0.7 mi from Bright apartment, renovated, in the center of Rome

On four corners of a traffic-choked intersection sit these four fountains, representing two rivers (the Tiber and Arno) and two goddesses (Diana and Juno) preside peacefully, adding a Renaissance flair to what would otherwise be a routine commute. We think this typifies the 'local' experience in Rome; daily mundane activities against a backdrop of truly incredible art.

It's a great place to spot tourists, that Piazza Barberini. Located in an island in the middle of the street, it's located right above the Barberini Metro stop. The Fontana del Tritone e Fontana delle Api sits in its center, visible from all around. While it may be overshadowed as an attraction by the nearby Fontana di Trevi, it's still ...

Great museum to spend an afternoon in- it's not nearly as crowded as many of the other sites, which allows for a lot less stress. I saw the National Geographic 125th Anniversary exhibition here and absolutely loved it. There are always rotating exhibitions, when I was there they had 2 running. Also they accept student cards for a discount!

Hands down, our best gay bar experience in the middle of Italian august (a lot was closed). This is less of a gay "bar" and more of a gay "kiosk" because the tiny little venue spills out into the street to such a degree that the tiny little dance floor is left empty as revelers drink, mingle, and gawk--practically in ...
