I approached the entrance to see a grand statue of Queen Victoria outside, overlooking College Green, the Town Hall and a gorgeous cathedral. It demanded respect! The Marriott really is a hotel of luxury and history, and talking to the head maitre‘d it’s charming to realise this is something the staff are proud of. Entering the rotating wooden doors I felt I could be in another century, a sensation added to by various black and white photos displayed of the hotel in times-gone-by. Inside there is a gorgeous and elaborate stone function room, which was the original entrance to the hotel (remember to look up at the ceiling!) The basement spa parades a bit further back in history, painted with the murals of a Roman Bath: I found it fantastic if slightly comical. A wonderfully balanced breeze hits you on entering the adjacent exercise rooms in the old wine vaults. Back upstairs the front lounges are elegant and bright, and made me want to sit back and enjoy the sophisticated Afternoon Tea, Claridge’s style (albeit a steep £55.) To really feel like a member of the royal family, I recommend the special painted ceiling in the four-poster bed suite. Rooms are well maintained- however, try to avoid the louder east-side rooms that face the nightlife of the harbour-side; and also I was unimpressed that bedroom wifi comes at a whopping £15/24 hours!Recommended for:
