This is my new go to insider tip. Take a right off the Brixton tube stop and enter the market where there are loads of really simple but yummy restaurants. Buy fresh fish. Or fresh pigs feet even. Religious paraphenalia shops. Very cheap and really interesting.

For flair and authenticity, visit South London’s enticing new maze of eateries,
Brixton Village Market [formerly Granville Arcade] for an ad-hoc gathering
of bistros, bars and bakeries. Get the hustle and bustle feel of street food yet
complete with often-live music, red-check tablecloths and wild-flower candle-
lit table décor. There’s a flourish of fresh breads, white bait, sea bass and warm
beetroot salads. Complete with a carafe of table red.

Only the locals know about this one...a community of vintage traders and artisan food sellers have transformed this old arcade. Great for cheap, high quality eats and funky trinkets.
