The Broken Spoke, a South Austin icon since 1964, is the best place in town to get Austin's real Lone Star culture. The rustic dancehall (open Tues.- Sat.), now surrounded by South Lamar's modern high-rise condos and mixed-use developments, is the most famous honky-tonk in town, attracting a diverse crowd, from lifelong regulars and silver-haired aficionados to hipsters and tourists. Show up early to enjoy the Spoke’s legendary chicken fried steak and warm up with a dance lesson (Wed-Sat) before the crowds arrive for a lively evening of live country music and good ol' Texas two-stepping.

Coolest old school honkey tonk bar in Austin. Cold bud, french fries, cowboy hats and country music.

You just haven't come to Texas until you learn to do the Texas 2-step, and the Broken Spoke is the place to do it! This place has been around since I was a girl, and I have twirled many a time on its dance floor. Don't expect fancy, cause this ain't it, but the chicken fried steak is good, the beer is cold, the bands are pure Country/Western, and you can pay for lessons that will have you 2-steppin' with the locals in no time. If you like to dance AND experience "local color" at the same time, it's a can't miss place!

A true Texas dancehall! Great music, beer, and two-stepping. Get there early for a dance lesson and to grab a table. Don't forget your leather soled cowboy boots.

Great atmosphere! If you want to learn to dance the Texas Two Step and Cotton Mouth Joe this is the place, they have beginners lessons starting at 8 on Weds, Fri and Sat. We took a lesson and then swung with the best and all the rest all night. Great music, cold beer and great people watching.

The music was great... the dancing was so much fun, but next time we visit I will avoid the food... way too greasy for my tastes.

The best in honky tonk, chicken-fried steak, cold beer, and the Texas Two-Step. You can't go wrong.
