The 27-mile (43 km) multi-use recreational trail begins in Ballard and follows along the Lake Washington Ship Canal and north along Lake Washington. This trail winds throughout the city and offers scenic views including near Gas Works Park of downtown and the University of Washington. Be advised to follow normal trail rules (slow to the right, pass left) as many Seattleites use this trail for commuting (via bicycle).

The internationally famous Burke-Gilman Bike Path runs alongside the canal and stretches for miles in both directions. Wave to the yachts and barges and take a break on the many public benches. But watch out: the Burke-Gilman is home base for Seattle’s intense cycling culture and there is quite a bit of spandex flying by. Fall into your “lane” behind the other pedestrians to avoid a collision.

Popular 27 mile trail begins at the Ballard waterfront and follows along the Ship Canal and to the north along Lake Washington. Popular for walkers, runners, cyclists and skaters.
