Gayle and I stayed here during our Honeymoon last October and used it as a base for visiting the nearby University town of Coimbra and the old Roman Ruins at Conimbriga. A Napoleonic War battle occurred within these Bussaco woods, where Lord Wellington spent the night at the Convent afterwards. We wandered through the Convent and it's almost as if Wellington had never left.

The Bussaco Woods are gorgeous and we wish we could have spent more time wandering around the area and the Gardens at the Hotel. The Hotel itself is elegant in the areas of the building that are open, especially within the main reception area and the restaurant. Otherwise, the hotel is a little worn around the edges and could use a variety of capital improvements to bring it up the Luxury Standards that they aspire.

The late romantic style azulejo panels by Jorge Colaço (1868-1942) depict battles and scenes form the Lusiads, Portugal's national epic.
