Buswells is an old hotel with a lot of charm and polish. It’s within sight of the Oireachtas, the Irish parliament, and is a favoured destination for drinks at the end of a legislative session. The rooms are on the small side, but they are clean and otherwise very cosy. By all means accept when they offer to show you to your room—you could easily get lost in the bowels of the hotel building. What’s nice about a hotel like this is that, because they’re never going to gut the place for a full remodelling job, the only path to improvement is in service, as evidenced by the great care and attention you get from staff. The location is unbeatable (tied, at best), and it is quite nice to be on such a quiet street in the city centre.

The bar in Buswells Hotel is meant to be one of the favorite haunts of the ministers and TDs from the nearby government buildings – I didn’t see anyone I recognized while I was there, but there were many people in dark suits talking in low voices, so I will assume that they were conducting vital backroom deals. The hotel, like the bar, is decorated like an old library might – dark paneling, somewhat fussy wallpapers, lots of polished brass. Several adjoining Georgian buildings make up the hotel, but because they were all built separately, the floors don’t all meet up. Walking to your room feels a bit like wandering in that M.C. Escher painting with the endless staircases. The room I was in was small but comfortable and was kitted out with the right necessities. The eccentricities of the place make me like it all the more – would definitely recommend.

From the moment you walk in to this hotel there is a lovely Old world, cosy feeling due to the lovely nooks and staircases and Georgian Dublin décor. There is a lovely charm throughout from the clustering of 5 old houses, which makes up the hotel building but there is no sense of higgledy piggldy or that it was ‘thrown together’. The bar is dotted with framed Irish politics cartoons and historical knickknacks, a nod to the hotels location – across from Leinster house, Government buildings. The bar has a ‘gentleman’s club’ feel about it with leather armchairs and dark wooden décor. It is an established haunt of politicians, who may be found nursing a tall pint of Guinness after work (and Buswells does a fantastic pint of Guinness!).
