Be an urban explorer and hike up through Chinatown up Nob Hill to this FREE museum. I think seeing the inner workings of the cable car system is fascinating, but others may not be as enamored. I was thrilled to find an authentic old street sign from MY street in the gift shop, and yes I shelled out the bucks to get it. Treat yourself with a stop at one of the big hotels or small cafes a couple blocks up.

One of my favorite San Francisco museums. Quirky, fun, but moving social history of the cable car. You learn a lot about the city's history into the bargain.

You can't expect much from a free museum, but the Cable Car Museum breaks any such expectations. Still functioning as the central cable center for the city's most beloved transportation system, it also provides a lesson on the history of how it all came about. This museum is definitely worth a hike up the hill.

The smell of machine oil and the sound of massive generators pulling cable at 9.5 miles per house fill this small museum. It is a simple museum that chronicles the history of cable cars in San Francisco very well, and demonstrates the archaic mechanics behind these SF icons.

A free and educational museum. It's small and close enough to other tourist stops so I highly recommend folks to stop by. I learned a lot about SF's history through this museum!

a free museum and gift shop. very cool to see that all the cable cars are powered by these wheels and electric cables. it is hot and smells of fumes inside. the gift shop attendant was not very noce about people taking pictures inside the gift shop.

Super cool old school technology. The heart of the whole SF cable car system, with views of all the key components actually operating and running the system... the cables, the wheels, all the gears, etc. Lots of historic pictures of the cable cars and SF in general. Recommended to everybody, but I think nerds in particular will especially appreciate it.
