One way to beat the weekend Breakfast crowds is to go really early. The very knowledgeable guy at my hotel's front desk raved about Screen Door and opined that the Cadillac Cafe and Tin Shed would be acceptable second choices. However, Screen Door opens at 9 AM, while the two alternatives are open at 7 AM. And since Cadillac Cafe was the closest to this hungry Father, the Kid and I headed off into the morning darkness to stake our our seat. The other suggestions are now bookmarked as there will be other Portland trips.
When we walked in there were only 2 other couples there, and by the time we left the place was filling up quickly. I like the fact that the clientele are older and that the restaurant space has large comfortable booths. The waiters also wear white shirts and sport ties, which give this place an extra splash of class (along with the Cadillac located in the faux inside garage). The 2 guys without the ties appear to run the place and I enjoyed the various small and friendly conversations between them and many repeat customers. I also appreciated that the cleanliness of the bathrooms that easily matched that of the restaurant and the visible kitchen area. Finally, the background music blended nicely with entire experience.
My only issue with our experience was that service was slow in places, particularly between ordering and table delivery and even more so with the time it took to get the check and pay it. Other aspects were fine, including fast initial seating/ordering and my coffee cup that never went empty.
The food was excellent. We split the Hazelnut French Custard Toast Breakfast (2 slices of French Custard Toast topped topped with roasted hazelnuts, chicken apple sausage, and a poached egg). It was more than enough food for both of us, and we left some at the table. To some, that's an ultimate compliment.
