Had high hopes for this Gaslamp Quarter diner. Yup, I'd seen it already on TV in the episode of "The Best Thing I Ever Ate," when Bobby Flay visited to get the recipe for the peanut butter-banana French toast. Let me tell you, it was *not* the best thing I ever ate. It wasn't even one of the better breakfasts I've had in San Diego. The bread was hardly battered, the fillings were slapped together and the dish was lukewarm. My partner's waffle and coffee weren't much to rave about either. I really love brunch, love diners and love SD, but give this place a miss, folks. Honest!Recommended for:Family Travelers

Cafe 222 is a good breakfast joint downtown. I've had business breakfasts here and met up with friends to chat over delicious food. They're known for their waffles and pancakes, but I've managed to stay away from those temptations thus far. The egg dishes are delicious, and the coffee is hot and frequently topped off.
