Very calm and cute city on the water. It's certainly odd that one of the most seemingly peaceful and beautiful cities was so close to one of the greatest tragedies of WW1.
Very close to a lot of important historical sites such as Gallipoli and Troy. The city itself is also vibrant with a distinct Mediterranean feel. Best fish I have ever eaten in Turkey can be found in Canakkale.

I totally recommend Canakkale, because that's where you will be able to check out the famous Trojan Horse. I think everyone in High School had to read Homers Iliad, and I had to check it out when I was studying abroad in Turkey. I totally enjoyed climbing up into the huge horse and getting my picture taken!
There are buses that leave frequently from Istanbul to Canakkale almost every hour in the day time. It takes around 6 hours by bus from Istanbul, and the price for a bus ticket round trip is not that expensive at all. (Around 40 Euro)

Istanbul is incredible (I go back again and again) but I would also recommend that you see Canakkale. It sounds morib but it's the most harrowing war memorial you will ever see, and done very, very tastefully. Plus it's great fun sitting in little cafes and watching the huge ships go by.
