The Anne Frank House is where the Frank family hid from the nazis when Amsterdam, and greater Holland, was under nazi domination. They were eventually discovered, and ended up being sent to a concentration camp. The entire family, with the exception of Anne's father, died either in or on the way to Bergen-Belzen concentration camp.

This part of Amsterdam--the canal belt of Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht--is the stateliest part of the city and the most scenic for a stroll. You can entertain yourself with numerous shops, cafes and museums along the way, or if you stroll in the evening, just by peering into the curtain-less windows of the grand homes that line the canals. This ...

As the world's first memorial to commemorate gays and lesbians who've suffered persecution, the Homomonument is a must for any first-time gay visitor to Amsterdam. Conceived in 1970 and finally completed in 1987, it features three pink granite triangles laid out to create a larger triangle, in remembrance of the outcast symbol forced upon gays by the Nazis. The monument's ...

This is one of Amsterdam's oldest brown cafés (local bars whose wall and cielings have turned brown because of centuries of patrons drinking and smoking). It was opened in the mid 17th century, and is located on the charming Prinsengracht (prince's canal), which is a lovely canal to walk up and down at night. The bar has a lot of ...

Let's be honest: for many people, the name 'Amsterdam' is synonymous with drug tourism. And while the red-light district is chock-a-block with places selling high-grade sinsemilla, few coffeeshops (as such establishments are called in the Netherlands) have as pleasant an atmosphere as Amnesia, located a short distance away on the Herengracht. They've got the usual selection of edibles and pre-rolled ...

Located right next to the historic Westerkerk and just steps from the Homomonument (about which it can happily provide further info), Amsterdam's Pink Point is a volunteer-run LGBT information center offering loads of free visitor advice and a wide variety of gay-themed souvenirs. Originally launched from a converted ice cream cart during the Amsterdam-hosted 1998 Gay Games, the Pink Point ...

Moooi is great fun to start with. You'll probably never be able to afford what they sell but seeing oversized furniture made from cardboard, a life-size horse lamp and all sorts of weird yet beautiful chairs inspires even the grumpiest patron. Like a livable art gallery, Moooi makes mundane objects seem special. Well worth a visit.

I swear I've overheard people of all ages in this store making little "vroom-vroom" sounds under their breath as they browse around. This shop specializes in old-school vintage toys and games--nothing that requires batteries. That's why it's often as much fun for grownups as for kids.

Close to the Anne Frank House, you will stumble upon this bookstore specializing in architecture and natural history. Larger than it looks from the outside, they have a really comprehensive collection, particularly on the study of urbanism. You will not only find material on Dutch cities and architects, but also books on cities and landscapes from all over the world.
