The charm of this renovated old Casco Viejo mansion is matched only by the charm of the staff that works here. The location, just a block away from Casco's plaza - can't be beat. I think I could spend an entire vacation just sitting on the patio with a glass of wine and watching the world walk through the cobbled streets below me. The rooms are decorated with a collection of hardwood furniture. In one room, a spiral staircase takes you up to a brick-walled loft, a great place to set up a laptop and get some work done or emails sent. This is a place I could bring my picky, wealthy great aunt and she wouldn't be able to find a single thing to complain about. With just a handful of rooms, you receive personalized attention by the professional staff. Some of the rooms are actually whole suites with multiple rooms, ideal for a family.

We visited many hotels and hostels in the charming barrio of Casco Viejo. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Out of all the places we reviewed, the Canal House most accurately portrayed what I imagine the neighborhood to have been like hundreds of years ago. The place was seriously immaculate with plantation style furniture, teak wood flooring, and tasteful art. There was a formal dining room with a gorgeous dark wood table. There was also a communal sitting room with English language newspapers where we were told tea was served. I'm not a big tea drinker but I would love to do tea here. The rooms varied in size from a smallish single to a whole floor with several rooms that suggested a whole family would fit comfortably. The impression I was left with was that if you stayed at the Canal you would temporarily become part of a larger family that included guests as well as staff.
