For a very laid-back picnic spot I recommend Canal Saint-Martin. Starting at metro République level and moving northwards, you will cross many cafés and take-away lunch spots, at least one person playing acoustic guitar and Jardin Villemin (for those who prefer a grassy enclosed area that is safer for kids). Further along, the Canal turns into Bassin de la Villette. This is where everyone plays “pétanque” in the evening and where I gather with friends for picnics before heading to one of the bars or nightclubs nearby.

Late Spring, all summer and early Fall this is a popular hangout for all Parisians. Great place to walk, or even run, if you wish.

Cool and refreshing green space. It is a popular among tourists and locals, and there are plenty of bars and bistros to grab a drink or a quick meal.

Around the corner from Bastille, this quaint canal and it's neighborhood is worth an afternoon of wandering. There are many cafes and artsy shops to discover!

From the Place de la Bastille I walked along the tree lined boulevard to Place de la République (the canal is underground between these points), then to the locks, that end at Rue du Faubourg du Temple, then followed the canal, which can be at times mundane and at times cute, all the way to Parc de la Villette in the 20e. There are a couple of nice parks along the way. Once at La Rotonde and Le Bassin de la Villette, the scene gets more interesting.

My homestay family lives near this canal, so i would frequent it often. It is peaceful to sit near the canal an have lunch or just read and relax. I often ran along the canal, but the combination if car exhaust and tobacco smoke forced me to change my route. Along the canal and in some of the side streets, there are unique boutiques. Great for souveniers.

Urban waterway fans delight! This north-south extension of the Seine offers a bucolic setting, curbside fishing, and actual working lock system to allow boats and barges to pass through. If you aren't dazzled by this unique sight, you might just spot one of Paris' famous "bo-bo's" (short for bohemian bourgeious) who have gentrified this neighborhood in recent years.

If the weather is nice, head up to the 10th arrondissement for a picnic along the café and boutique lined Canal St. Martin and enjoy great people, boat, and duck watching! It's an equally beautiful and far less touristy alternative to a stroll along the Seine.
