There are a lot of historic buildings in Washington, but this one is just old. Nevertheless, they have great views of the Capitol and the Washington Monument from the higher floors. And because it’s on the south side (the side with the freeway included in the view), it’s waaay cheaper than hotels with views from the north side.

The lobby is newly redone and the corridors are nicely kept up. Furniture in the rooms is a bit worn and there was tape on the windows, but the staff here is so nice and helpful that it doesn’t even matter. Continental breakfast is offered for $3.99. The restaurant is closed during slow periods, but they have free shuttle service to restaurants and monuments.

The neighborhood, though safe, is a little gray and includes a McDonald’s, but the hotel’s owner has bought the shuttered city school across the street and plans either a 5-star hotel or a shopping mall in its place.

From the outside this hotel is not much to look at (someone in my party likened it to a building in a communist country 30 years ago) and it's in an area of DC that the city is attempting to revitalize, so there isn't tons to do and there are not many places to eat nearby. You'll defintely need to take a quick cab to restaurants in Dupont.

The biggest draw of this hotel is their weekend pool party during the summer. The pool area is filled with people and a DJ, and they even have 3 food trucks in the back lot. Nowhere near as polished as a Vegas pool party, but probably as close as you will get in DC!

The rooms are basic, nothing fancy. You can tell they have made some attempts to make the interiors look more hip to match the pool vibe with cool light fixtures and damask patterned wall paper, but not very thoroughly, so you can still tell the building is ultimately in need of a deeper makeover. The beds are comfy, though and conveniently there is a McDonalds across the street. Another weird note, but not a big deal -- no food is allowed on their lobby (even the desk clerk admitted to me he thought it was weird).
