One of the perks of being an oilfield brat is we got to stay in swanky hotels on Uncle Arco's dollar. Our move to Anchorage was no exception. We stayed here for just under a month (in Jakarta it was 6 months at the Hilton). Anyway, the Captain Cook Hotel has a dark, atmospheric lobby and lounge. Lots of stuffed wild beasts, volcanic rock and wood paneling everywhere else. The bar is rowdy (I had to pass it every time I went to our room) but seemed inviting even back then. Good restaurants, location and service.

The actual name is The HOtel Captain Cook, which is the old grand dad of Anchorage hotels. It has over 500 rooms, from basic doubles and kings to a variety of suites. It has 4 restaurants as well.
You can expect to pay between $100 and $200 off season, but if you plan on coming in August, the same rooms skyrocket to between $290 and $650.

Nice, comfortable hotel that is ideally located in downtown Anchorage. It's close to many shops, bars, the convention center, etc. - and also has a nice collection of shops and restaurants of its own. From the upper floors, the views of Denali are mind-blowing...

I am sure I haven't had the chance to really enjoy all the Cpt. had to offer but the thing I really remember the most was that they had this shop that had an electronic clock that would display the number of day light hours they were experiencing that day. The first day there - 22:12:45 in counting....OMG. Otherwise the restaurant they had there was nothing special and yes when I was there it was kind of old school but it was a luxurious feel that I really enjoyed. BTW I also got to watch Hot Fuz...yeah I know....but I couldn't help myself. I was curious. The location was not necessarily in the center of everything but it gave me the chance to walk the area a little and really take in the local surroundings. The entire area had that kind of small town homey feeling....kind of something I saw in that sitcom....Northern Exposure....do you remember that show or did I just inadvertantly tell you how old I was???
