Lots of fun to take a walk and watch the surfers. Park on the street for free or you can pay to park in the lot.

South Carlsbad State Beach is one of my favorite camping locals! A very family-friendly, beautiful spot, the Carlsbad beach is great for kids. If you are up for camping, the nightly rate is very reasonable (ranging from $35-$50). The campsites are set atop the cliffs overlooking the dolphin-filled waters, with easy-access stairs down to the beach scattered throughout the campground. With a general store (great for a mid-day ice cream treat), room to bike-ride throughout the grounds, and plenty of sandy beach, the kids won't want to leave!Recommended for:Family Travelers

Big stretch of beach in North County San Diego. Lots of lifeguards and decent public restrooms at each end. Swim, surf or get your workout on by running the Sea Wall, a paved walkway along the beach (with numerous stair cases for the advanced).
