This church is best known for the 1635 appearance of the country's patron saint, the Black Virgin. If you are anywhere near San Jose, or passing through Cartago this is a must see location! The Basilica, as it sits on the Plaza Mayor will astound you. From it's architecture outside and in you will be amazed at how amazing it appears.

Also, the Ruinas across the Plaza are equally remarkable.

Description

Absorb a bit of the colonial and reverent atmosphere in Cartago, a small city near San Jose, Costa Rica. Although most of the city's oldest buildings were decimated by earthquakes in the 19th century, you can still view the few intact historical sites- for example, the Santiago Apóstol Parish Ruins. A new City Museum also recently opened two blocks north of the Plaza Mayor, and the bustling Central Market is open on Thursdays and Saturdays . You may especially enjoy visiting the majestic Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles, Costa Rica's most famous cathedral, which is consecrated to the Virgen de los Ángeles (the Lady of the Angels).
