Free Wi-Fi that is fully functional lets me ignore the small room size. Located in an historic building (the desk clerk told me this was the first building completed after the great earthquake) everyone I came in contact with were friendly and helpful. The hotel has no restaurant or coffee shop but it provides 20% off coupons for Lori's Diner which is open 24 hours a day and is located about three doors down the street.

The Cartwright Hotel (formerly the Larkspur), a boutique hotel, despite its modern and welcoming lobby, is located in an older building that brings you back into a different era of old San Francisco charm. They have 114 beautiful guestrooms, 2 meeting rooms, as well as a business center, a lounge with a piano, plentiful lobby seating, and a bar (closed currently awaiting permit).
Though they don’t have a fitness center in the building, they do offer hotel guests use of the Club One Fitness located a block away -- better than what most boutique hotel gyms usually offer. Free Wi-Fi is also available throughout the hotel. Their cozy rooms feel homely – and after speaking with their extremely warm & courteous staff, it is just how they want you or your four-legged friend to feel – right at home. They even have snacks in the lobby for your pet.
If you don’t want to leave the hotel in search of food, Lori’s Diner delivers, and if you happen to be staying there on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, you can even check out their pop-up theatre show held in one of their meeting rooms.Recommended for:Business Travelers

Pay attention here, because it can be a bit confusing. The Cartwright Hotel Union Square is the hotel formerly known as the Larkspur Union Square, and more prior formerly known as the historic Cartwright Hotel. History has a way of repeating itself, and the Larkspur folks had the right mind to restore the historic name to this beautiful San Francisco hotel.
Inside the lobby, you’ll see remnants of that history in old stubs, brochures and scraps of paper. The Bar 1915, a lounge located on premises, celebrates this history with an old lounge ambience.
On the other side, rooms are modern and well-maintained. Wireless Internet is provided for free and rooms include flat-screen televisions.
Location-wise, the Cartwright Hotel sits in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Staying here, you’re surrounded by some of the best of the city.

The Larkspur is a nice, little modern boutique hotel right next to Union Square. I particularly liked the lobby: plenty of couches and chairs to lounge on, brick floor, pictures of SF on the walls, and plenty of light...it was a great place to relax.
For bigger people, a warning: their rooms with two beds have twin-sized beds...really bringing me back to the college dorm days. The bathroom is also really small here, with the tub shaped like a cute little square. The front rooms can be a bit more noisy being right by the streets of downtown SF.
The bar here is on the smaller side and only serves beer and wine. Unfortunate for those people looking to rage their faces off in a hotel bar.
