Casa Cid de Leon is cool and dim, offering a respite when it's hot out. Details such as pretty frescoes make the all-suite boutique hotel – originally a 16th century house – stand out. And the seven suites, all different, are impressive. The one I saw, a standard suite, included an ornate king bed, a cushy sofa with a fold-out bed, an elegant embroidered sofa and chair set around a large coffee table, a desk and a fireplace, as well as a mini fridge stocked with drinks, a DVD player, flat-screen TV with cable, air conditioning and a safe. The hotel's outdoor space is less impressive, especially compared to its many Colonial-style competitors with big courtyards. The lower terrace serves breakfast and lunch, while the small upper terrace offers a view of at least five churches – but both are noisy, and the upper terrace seems like an afterthought. Still, if outdoor space isn't a priority, these suites just a block from the zocalo are a lovely option.

So you've got money to spend, you'd like to be in the middle of the action and you want to be comfortable? Casa Cid de Leon is probably a good place for you. Located in the heart of central Oaxaca, just a couple of blocks from the zócalo, this hotel has just seven rooms, all suites. A spiral staircase curls up through the middle of the 16th-century building (watch your head, tall people!), all the way to a rooftop terrace where breakfast and lunch are served. The rooms are luxurious: big, comfortable beds, DVD players and cable TV, air conditioners, minibars, antique furniture. All the comforts of home, or at least as comfortable as you'd like your home to be. Got work to do? The rooms have big desks and internet access, although it's far more fun to escape out the front door into the cobblestone streets.
