Gorgeous place for a drink over the ocean in the lounge of this 5 star hotel. Service in the lounge is so-so, food in the lounge is so-so and over-priced, but you sit in that lounge with a drink at sunset (arrive early) overlooking the Santa Monica pier and the beach and life is just perfect.Recommended for:

When I get to a new city I love to dine or have a drink in at least one or two of the best hotels in town; first because I cannot always stay at these places as the prices are often prohibitive and I want to experience them anyway and second because they usually are in beautiful locations, and have world class ambience. Casa del Mar is one of these places. Whether it is during the summer or around the holidays Casa del Mar will deliver on these points. It's gorgeous, beautifully situated on the beach, and all and all a great place for a special breakfast, lunch, a drink or dinner. Feel pampered and special even if this trip you're not staying there overnight!Recommended for:

One of those old school hotels that probably dates from the time that men and women's swimsuits more or less looked the same. The lobby has a piano, a bar, cocktail and food service, and lots of seating. Go around sunset and grab a seat by one of the large windows overlooking the beach and the pier.

I have not eaten here nor have I stayed here. However, after perusing the lobby and adjacent areas and speaking with some of the attendants, I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel or to bring visitors here for a lunch. Carefully restored, this hotel permeates a class that a hotel such as Shutters does not.

I will be staying here for one day prior and before a two-week bootcamp; it's supposed to be among the top beach hotels in Santa Monica/Malibu-area of CA. But the rate listed is incorrect if you use Magellan Vacations. It's old school -- you Google, but then use a phone and speak to a travel agent to book you rates that can be as much as 50 to even 75% less....Amazing outfit based in Montreal. They cover 3.5 start and above hotels in New York, Miami, LA, Santa Monica, (Las Vegas I think), and now Toronto. Highly recommended. As for the hotel, I'm certain I will love it and try to remember to come back and review the actual hotel upon my return (could not submit this without rating it, but based on diligence think it will likely be a 5 -- will definitely change it if doesn't meet that standard :)

For an oh-so-luxe pampering experience, head to the beach and Casa del Mar (hotelcasadelmar.com), where diamonds—yes, diamonds—are harnessed to lift your skin and repair elasticity. New to the spa, the Diamond Experience Multi-Sensorial Lifting Facial ($250/90 min.) uses Natura Biss¯e’s cutting-edge Diamond Collection products to restore your skin’s natural brightness and therapeutic gemstones to absorb, amplify and return energy to your body. After a spritz of Diamond Experience Water around the warm bed, tuck in to have your chakras harmonized and face cleansed and exfoliated three times. Aromas of lavender relax you throughout, including during an energy-balancing shiatsu facial massage and marine DNA-infused mask that lifts and firms the skin. The results of the Diamond Experience are game-changing: a dewy, taut visage—sans surgery—that will have you loving what you see in the mirror for days.
