Casa Viento is a hidden jewel located in a residential neighborhood north of downtown San Miguel. Its an intimate place with a set of 2 hotel rooms, a honeymoon suite, and 2 apartments with full kitchens. All have modern furnishings, and while they don’t have much flair, they are pleasant and quite comfortable (think great bedding, A/C, and wireless internet). A nice pool sits in the center of the small complex and the beach is just a couple blocks away. If you’re interested in kiting or SUPing, De Lille Sports Academy, is based out of the hotel and is run by one of the hotel owners, Raul De Lille, who also happens to be a world class windsurfer and kiteboarder. The only downer about the place: its distance from town. Consider hiring taxis or rent a car during your stay.

This out-of-the-way hotel—whose name means “House of Wind,” more or less—caters to kiteboarders, windsurfers, and now stand up paddlers; I’m not into any of those things, but I still really like staying here. The hotel has a great vibe, thanks to the friendly American-Mexican couple who own and run it. The rooms are comfortable and welcoming, with tasteful Mexican art, and most with kitchens and separate living and sleeping areas. There’s a clean pool in the middle of the property, great for cooling off in the afternoon. The Mexican half of the couple—Raul DeLillo—is a Cozumel native and a world-class windsurfer and kiteboarder. He does rentals, classes and tours right out of the hotel, from beginner to expert. And when there’s no wind, he does suping instead, using his own brand of handcrafted board. You can walk from the hotel to some good kiting and suping spots, but you’ll probably want a car or bike to get back and forth to town.
