A visit to Rome's catacombs is a must for anyone interested in the history of the city and early Catholic church. Touring the narrow passageways, you can see where early Christians were buried, celebrated Mass, and, in some cases, were violently attacked.Recommended for:

If you have an extra day in Rome, take time to visit the San Callisto Catacombs. It's very easy to get there by subway and bus. It's a pleasant and scenic ride along the Appian Way. You can only visit a portion of them but it gives you a very good idea of what they were like. You must enter the catacombs with a guide. These catacombs are considered to be among the greatest and most important of Rome. They originated in the second century and contain the remains of "tens of martyrs, 16 popes and very many Christians". The tour was very good and the history fascinating.Recommended for:
