The interior of Oaxaca’s cathedral is not nearly as impressive as the facade and the scene outside, but the seat of Oaxaca’s Catholic diocese still brings in the devout, some of whom hold animated discussions in front of the cathedral’s Jesus statues. The statues and carvings on the facade are even more impressive at night, when lighting gives the building an imposing air. The plaza outside the cathedral is a constant fiesta, where clowns routinely attract crowds and vendors sell long, cylindrical balloons that children bounce high into the air (and often onto nearby roofs).
