One of Barcelona's most beautiful sights is also host to one of Europe's most...atypical manger scenes at the market immediately in front. In a typical nativity scene you’d expect to find Mary, Joseph, shepherds and a baby in a manger, but what about a small figurine in a squatting position with its pants around its ankles and a “surprise” behind it? These strange “Caganer” figures, whose origin is unknown, come in all shapes and sizes and are typical in Christmas markets around Catalonia, especially the one in front of Barcelona’s beautiful Cathedral of Santa Eulalia.

The grown jewel of the gothic distric, it was build in the 13th to 15th century, and is the seat of Archbishop of Barcelona. It is a majestic example of gothic architecture, with plenty of lovely stain glass windows

Incredible structure. The tower was unfortunately under construction when I visited, but I loved exploring the cathedral anyway. The women at the door would not permit my sister and I inside until we purchased scarves to cover our cleavage - not unexpected in Europe.

Wow! Massive and beautiful! The size alone is incredibly impressive! It's a great thing to see for free in the city. Just the sheer grandeur of a European cathedral makes it worth seeing.

A beautiful Gothic cathedral in Barcelona. However, the coolest thing about it is what happens in front on Sundays, when locals gather to dance the Sardana, the Catalan traditional dance. When I saw this, the plaza was full of people, there was a huge band, and what really made it lovely was that the people dancing were so clearly there because they enjoyed it and it was part of their culture. Ah, the elusive "authentic" travel moment.

Nestled in the heart of "el Barrio Gotico", it makes a good base when you wandering the labyrinth-like streets of the Gothic quarter. Free for visitors, it's a great place to feast the eyes on Gothic architecture.

This Gothic Barcelona Cathedral is beautiful. It was part of a Gothic tour I was taking, and it's really lovely inside. From the outside, you can see some intricate details in the design of the clock and such, but take a moment to go inside. It's really neat, and the designers created the cathedral in a way to allow as much open space as possible. Another plus is that it's free! :)

A fabulous cathedral right in the heart of the Gothic district. The ceilings inside seem to never end. I loved coming in here and being blown away by the sheer size of this amazing shrine. I loved the fact that it doesn't cost a cent to enter...just enter quietly and enjoy.
