The Cecil Hotel definitely has a lot of character when you first walk in giving you the feeling of going back in time to old-school LA. However, this is one of those cases where old-school needs some updating. Their gym was under construction when I visited. The breakfast nook upstairs was okay, but could also use a facelift.

The Cecil Hotel is an impressive, 15-story building in the Historic Core area of downtown Los Angeles. Walking through the grand lobby is like being transported to another era. And the location is about as perfectly central as you can get for exploring all the great bars and restaurants in the neighborhood. There are 600 rooms here – some have private bathrooms and others have shared baths. The price tag is pretty attractive, though the rooms themselves could use an update. They are clean, but a bit worn out. Be sure to take advantage of the free continental breakfast each morning. Also, note that there’s no parking on site (but plenty of nearby lots) and WiFi is only available in the lobby (it’s free!) – not the rooms.

A grand lobby entryway with columns, marble and an amazing Tiffany glass skylight show this historic hotel has enjoyed an opulent past when built in 1927. The gilded staircase rises to a lovely mezzanine for Internet access and free continental breakfast. Unfortunately, the rooms are tiny and look a bit shaggy without an apparent upgrade in a while. That said, I noticed some sprucing up of hallways and rooms happening. If on a serious budget and not spending much time in your room, this could work. There’s also a little fitness room and it shares the building with Stay, which takes up the fourth through sixth floors.
A little cafe between the two entryways serves guests.

As we walked into the lobby the hotel seemed pretty nice. The lobby looks like it was designed and built in or around the 1920's. It features a nice check in area as well as some nice public seating areas.
We asked to see a room and were lead to a typical room for this hotel. It was old , the carpet clean but threadbare. Although you had interesting views from the windows I couldn't help noticing that the windows where dirty and the screens damaged and broken. The beds looked functional and clean but not very inviting. The bathrooms are decent and looked newly redone.
Although located in a fun to be in area downtown, I think that the only thing to recommend this place would be the price. You can get a room for about $84.00 or so. In all fairness this place is in transition. There was a lot of remodeling going on on one of the floors that we visited. So who know maybe down the line it could be pretty nice once it's been redone. But for now, it's relatively inexpensive and very well located to have some fun while visiting Los Angeles.
