Built by Mimar Sinan in 1584, this hamami is like a resort beneath Istanbul. A little expensive compared to more local hamami in Turkey (45 lira for entrance, 60 lira for the scrub down). However you are treated like a princess (or prince) and given the best of the best. If you haven't experience a Turkish Bath before this is a good place to start out.Recommended for:

If you have never been to a Hamam, or Turkish Bath, you are missing out on one of life's great pleasures. The main room of this historic hamam has a domed roof with star shaped holes to let in sunlight. You lay on an octagonal marble slab, heated from below, until you start to sweat. Then they start dumping warm, soapy water on you and scrubbing you down. Pretty amazing. It has been a couple of years since I have been here, so ask at your hotel to confirm that service is still good.

A turkish bath is an experience unlike any other. As an American, when I first got in I was a little unnerved by the whole thing. But after I laid on the hot marble slab and then got scrubbed and massaged, I was over my issues. It will be an unforgettable way to start your Turkish vacation. You are just doing what all the Turks do.
