This cemetery is choke full of grand monuments to various illustrious Buenos Aires residents. Of course, the one tomb that attracts the crowds is that of Eva per on, "Evita", the controversial First Lady of Argentina in the early 50's. It is a nice 10 minutes walk from the apartment.
The restaurants around cater mostly to tourists with one nice exception, the Biela cafe that is one of the city's traditional haunts. The Nuestra Senora del Pilar church is a beautiful example of colonial architecture and is the setting for many society weddings. The convent attached to it is now the BA Design center.

Recoleta is a highlight of Argentina. The stone cemetery is a stunning city of the dead - above ground monuments line rows and rows of aisles. Things to note: Evita's tomb is here, but it's not one of the decorative, elaborate sites. A simple family tomb (her family, not her husbands) is where she is interred. In the summer, the cemetery is brutally hot, so carry a cold bottle of water and wear sunscreen.

Beautiful, serene and filled with history, La Recoleta cemetery was one of my favorite places that I visited while in Buenos Aires. Once you've fought your way through the crowd of tourists in front of Eva Perón's tomb - still unmarked because the government refuses to recognize that it's there - it's a wonderful place to stroll around. Many of the mausoleums are crumbling, but this fact somehow adds to its seemingly untouched beauty.

La Recoleta Cemetery is a fascinating place to spend a morning. There are old and famous mausoleums here, in a wide variety of architectural styles, as well as more recent ones, which family members are obviously still visiting. Very interesting to see the styles and traditions change over time.

This is one of the most fascinating cemeteries in the world. It's tombs and statuary are well worth the visit. A lot of tourist come to see the tomb of Maria Eva Duarte de Peron but probably don't know how much she was hated by the common people. If you do visit, take some dry cat food as the place is a sanctuary for cats.
