“The Dark Continent” is an old term which Africa earned on account of its mysterious and nature and uncharted regions. While the moniker is no longer applicable to much of the continent, it still may for C.A.R. This 620,000 km2 nation, once known as Ubangi-Shar, won its independence from France in 1960. Since that time, it has had only a trickle of Western influence. Those willing to brave travel here will find what some call “the real Africa”. With its borders touching countries like Sudan, Chad, and the DRC, it is not hard to understand why safety can be an issue in this nation of four and a half million residents. Most foreign governments discourage unnecessary travel to this center of the Africa.
