Prepare yourself for an explosion of colors, smells and sounds. The market has been around since Victorian times - the wrought iron gates erected in 1844 still stand - and it's the perfect place to get a feel for day to day routine in Mauritius. The vendors are half the fun; the energy and persistence applied in selling their products - fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, souvenirs or even aphrodisiacs and herbal remedies - is amazing. That being said, do not hesitate to bargain - start at about 30% of suggested price. The PrideMark store upstairs sells hard discount brands and is also worth a look.
