With unrivalled views across the Grand Canal and over St Mark's Square, Centurion Palace in Venice, Italy, started out in life as a monastery. Now a luxury hotel with a canal entrance, guests can arrive at this typically Gothic Venetian building by water taxi. Inside, the 50 rooms are ultra-modern with a welcoming ambiance.

This gorgeous hotel is a perfect example of the delightfully contradictory (new) tradition of design hotels in Venice: classic architecture and adventurously modern décor and atmosphere. Everything here is appealing and interesting and, well, cool, from the giant glass sculpture at the entrance to the purple velvet bar area to the futuristic all-white restaurant overlooking the water. Inside the room (the superior), all the furniture looked as though it was hand-chosen by some New York art buyer (in fact, it’s all custom made for the hotel). I loved that the bed was up on a pedestal, that the bathroom was “papered” in gold leaf, that there was a spiral of lights in the shower, and that the room had an iPod speaker station. With so many other luxuries, it seems silly to mention, but I also loved that the minibar offered Pringles. I should also mention that this hotel has fantastic views: both of the water and of the ridiculously handsome and well-dressed employees.

This place is not at all what I would have expected had I not done my research. Had I just come upon this place by accident, I would not have expected what I found, from the outside it looks like just another amazing random surprise around just another dark corner in Venice. But as soon as you walk through the almost Moorish arches into the entryway, you are in the most stylish hotel in Venice. Every room in this entire massive building is different, from the glowing glass reception desk to the white room of a restaurant to the velvet cushioned bar room with a bar that’s a picture frame. Not to mention several places you can sit right along the canal grande. There’s also the entryway itself there’s a big courtyard that you can sit and absorb the sunlight. If you want more sun, sit in the courtyard. If you want to cool off, sit on the shady canal deck. Room was a two story room that was so much more modern than everything else in Venice, but not in an obnoxious way. It really showed this was a design hotel. My favorite thing in the room was that in the upstairs to the left of the bed was one room just for the toilets and on the other side was a whole room with nothing but a bathtub. Gold walls and a bathtub and no room for anything else. Obviously they included the necessary (luxury) amenities like slippers and a bahthrobe. And a killer canal view. And impeccable service.

5 stars L with a fantastic position looking Canal Grande. Very close to Peggy Guggheneim Museum also. This hotel offers everything a 5L stars could, including prices. Very elegant in every detail.

Sitting right on top of the Grand Canal, this hotel once a Palace is truly Grand and very beautiful. It is spruced up with a bit of a modern twist not leaving the Venetian Flair too far behind.
As a boutiquish hotel, with no more then 40 or so people, I loved the romantic feel, of thinking I was in an actual Palace...
