- CESiaK (Centro Ecologico Sian Ka'an)First to ReviewJan 23, 2014
This is an incredible organization that offers a variety of tours of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, just south of Tulum. Excursions include visiting lesser-known Maya ruins, exploring Sian Ka'an's extensive lagoons on kayak or motor boat, and bird watching. CeSiak also offers eco-friendly accommodations in tent cabins just inside Sian Ka'an, in case you want to stay a bit longer.

Centro CESiaK (aka Boca Paila Camps) has always been a favorite of mine in this area. I really like the concept, even if some of the parts are less than perfect. It’s operated by a non-profit organization that does environmental and educational work related to the biosphere reserve and region as a whole. It’s super sustainable, with wind power and low-impact restrooms, green construction, etc. Guestrooms are actually heavy canvas tents, but they’re installed on raised wood platforms with palapa roof and have real beds and wooden dressers to lend a homey feel. Shared bathrooms are clean and accessible, and there's a good restaurant. The tent-cabins are perched on a bluff overlooking the ocean; some guests complain about the strong and ever-present wind, but I find the place bracing. And there are a bunch of great tours you can take right from the property, especially kayaking in the reserve.
